The 2026 Florida Keys Fishing Guides Association’s Kids Fishing Expo was an incredible success, and it simply would not have been possible without the generosity and support of our amazing community.

Even with less-than-ideal weather, the enthusiasm was undeniable. More than 80 kids registered ahead of time, and even more showed up on the day, eager to learn new skills and be part of something special. Seeing that level of excitement and turnout, rain or shine, was a powerful reminder of how important opportunities like this are for our youth.

With guidance from some of the top fishing guides in the Upper Keys, participants received hands-on instruction in both fly casting and spin casting. For many, it was their first time picking up a rod, while others were able to refine and build on skills they already had. Either way, the patience, knowledge, and encouragement shared by these professionals made a lasting impression.

The day was filled with interactive learning stations where kids rotated through different activities. They learned how to throw a cast net, tie essential fishing knots, and even tie their own flies – something they were able to take home with them as a reminder of the experience. These are practical, lifelong skills that connect the next generation to the water in a meaningful way.

Adding to the excitement were casting competitions organized by age group, with both distance and accuracy categories. The friendly competition brought out big smiles, lots of laughter, and a little bit of healthy rivalry.

Lunch and drinks were covered by our generous donors to keep everyone energized, and each child received a swag bag to take home just one more example of the thoughtfulness and generosity behind this event. Many of the early registrants also received a free fishing rod to continue honing their skills and enjoying what makes growing up in the keys so special.

Best of all, this entire day- every lesson, every activity, every meal, and every giveaway was offered completely free of charge. That’s only possible because of the supporters, sponsors, and volunteers who believe in investing in the future of our fishing community.
